When you are performing your ablutions,
it is not merely washing your hands and feet. That
is not the real point, washing eyes, ears -
The purpose of washing each of these parts of your body is
that it gives you time bit by bit, part by part,
to move your awareness away from the world
and toward God.

Time to say within your heart,
I am now going to establish a connection with God.
I am going to turn towards God.
I am going to hand over my responsibilties, my love to God.

The blessed Prophet, may God’s peace be uponhim, said,
“While doing your ablutions, you must be aware only of your love for God.
Make your heart steadfast in that state.

This determination must become strong
through the process of your ablutions.
By the time you have finished, you must have
the intent and the aim of seeing God
Nothing else.
It doesn’t matter, then, whether your eyes
are opened or of your eyes are closed
God is all you will see whether they are opened or closed.
This is the point when you can really call prayer surrender.
